Aside from stuffing and mashed potatoes with gravy, Green Bean Casserole seems to be one of the most recognized (and expected) Thanksgiving side dish. This version calls for a few unusual seasonings and ingredients - which might wake up your dinner guests as they ask “what’s in this?”
Often recipes call for shallots, and I’ve always substituted onion in it’s place. But I didn’t realize that a shallot does not taste the same as an onion. The flavor is a cross between that of an onion and garlic - but less strong than either alone. It gives a delicate hint of both without overpowering the other ingredients.
Many argue that shallots will not give you onion breath. That is true in part, but don’t count on it - it’s just ‘different’. But hey - it’s Thanksgiving! Who is worried about onion breath anyway?
This recipe was found in Good Housekeeping Magazine November 2009. If you are tired of “same old, same old” - you just might love it. I thought it was great for a change, but I still love the standard version. If I changed it, my family would revolt.
